Stones Peaks' northeast flank forms a large part of Forest Canyon, sitting as a massive 12,922' rock east of Sprague Mountain (which forms part of the Continental Divide).
It is visible from many places, especially the Moraine Park area, Cub Lake, and Trail Ridge Road. It is accessed via Sprague Mountain and Glacier either from Bear Lake over Bighorn Flats (a 20-mile round trip without campsites), or up Spruce Canyon.
It was probably named after G.M. Stone (1841-1917), who was a geology professor at Colorado College. He was also a surveyor and a guest in the Hotel near Mary's Lake where Hallett lived. Both Chapin and Hallett, guides of the area, might have named this peak for him.#
